Rent a Boat in Halkidiki — Start from Vourvourou

Halkidiki has three peninsulas and hundreds of kilometres of coastline, so where you start matters more than anything else. Vourvourou, on the east coast of Sithonia, is the bay most locals would pick: sheltered, shallow in places, mirror-calm on a normal summer morning — and directly opposite Diaporos Island with its famous lagoons. That is where our nine boats are moored.

Why Vourvourou beats the open coast

• Sheltered water. The bay is protected by Diaporos and a scatter of islets, so first-time drivers get calm water instead of open-sea chop.
• The destinations are minutes away. Diaporos, the shallow turquoise lagoons and the hidden coves are right in front of the dock — you spend your day swimming, not commuting.
• Safe for families. Parts of the lagoons are waist-deep and every boat carries life jackets in all sizes — calm enough for children and non-swimmers.
• No licence for most boats. Greek law allows engines up to a certain power without a licence. A calm 15-minute briefing and you are ready.

Where you can go in a day

A full day comfortably covers Diaporos Island, the blue lagoon, a string of quiet coves you will have mostly to yourself, and a taverna stop on the water. A half day covers the bay and the nearest beaches. If you would rather not drive at all, an experienced local skipper takes the helm for a small additional fee.

Getting to Vourvourou

Vourvourou sits on Sithonia, the middle of Halkidiki's three peninsulas, past Nikiti on the east coast road. From Thessaloniki and its airport it is a scenic drive of roughly an hour and a half — easily done as a day trip if you are staying elsewhere in Halkidiki, and worth every minute of it.
